A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
