Congress Approves Measure to Make Public Epstein Files

The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to legislation that will mandate the disclosure of official records concerning the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House relented after months of trying to forestall the joint action involving a controversy that has dogged the president since his return to the White House.

Swift Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, accelerating the process. Earlier that day, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a massive majority.

The public have endured sufficient delay. Those affected have waited long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader stated in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”

Presidential Signature

The bill next heads to Trump for his approval. The president signaled on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Even though the president has for months rejected the controversy over the authorities' approach of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the past few days, and announced he would approve it if it is presented to him.

Support and Opposition

The Democratic party, along with those affected and their representatives who were seated in a viewing area, applauded after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who said he feared the measure would reveal specific data of witnesses, potential suspects and others involved in the investigation.
