Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using such drugs must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of appetite.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
