Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
