Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
